A new report analyzing the state of mobile devices and media for 2012 finds that consumers are rapidly adopting both smartphones and tablets, while also still using PCs. The result, comScore says, is that media companies must face “the rise of the ‘digital omnivore’ – consumers who now go about their days engaging seamlessly through multiple online touchpoints.”
How does knowing how people are consuming news change the way you prepare yourself for a career in journalism?

  1. The rise of the 'digital omnivore' proves how important it us for us as young journalists to learn how to effectively utilize multimedia to connect to consumers worldwide.

I believe it's crucial for every journalism student to learn how to combine text, images and video to tell a story. In fact, as the distinctions between print and broadcast begin to fade, I believe the multimedia track should be the only option at journalism schools nationwide.

It will be our duty post-graduation to bridge the gaps between the newsroom and website, between traditional journalism and new media, and to dream of new ways to engage readers. We need to plan accordingly.

  2. The evolution of the internet in the world of journalism has not only changed the way journalism is produced, but also how it is taught.

First, journalism students today are now required to learn how to write for the web. Second, the "breaking" in "breaking news" is now more immediate than it has ever been before. While traditionally, we used to get our "breaking news" via television, now we rely on the internet (and social media, in particular) to receive the most up-to-date news.

Newsrooms no longer have lag room to write scripts regarding breaking news. Now, they require a web department to update their Facebook and Twitter accounts when breaking news strikes.
