  1. The Superbowl is a huge national event that has the potential to draw even non-football fans (like me) out into the living room. With the new concept of "live tweeting" it only makes sense that such a widespread event would elicit such a huge reaction from social media outlets. I thumbed through my Twitter feed while the game was going on (and most of my friends stared at me since they waited until the commercial breaks) and was surprised to see how many were tweeting their opinions on recent commercials or plays. It reminded me of the Grammys, when I tweeted about Nicki Minaj's crazy performance and a few seconds later found a lot of my friends had similar reactions to mine (mainly, what did I just watch?). The Superbowl commercials that used hashtags and encouraged viewers to their Facebook pages also helped stir this trend. It's a smart marketing campaign because long after the commercial has ended, there's a chance the hashtag might still be a "trending topic" and spark others' curiosity who may not have seen the initial commercial. The product is then talked about some more.
